The Emergence of Modernism

The Emergence of Modernism 1900-1950

World War 1 lasted until November 1918. After the war, people have chance to redesign the world.
During the war, there was great advance of technology:such as skyscrapers, automobiles, trains, photography and movie picture: and it contributed to Modernism Movement.
"The Machine" was source of design inspiration and the design was very functional.
Modernism movement came out from rejection of the past and historical design and embraced industrial design.
Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier were outstanding architects.

Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright was the first major modern architect. He was American architect, interior designer, writer and educator. HE worked in the offices of Adler and Sullivan in Chicago.
He value the unity in planning, materials, structure and site, and organic architecture.
Most of his works were residential designs, but his few commercial works were outstanding.

Guggenheim Museum is another his commercial work.

International Style

The International Style is a major architectural style that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, the formative decades of Modern architecture.
The International Style was identified by three principles: the expression of volume rather than mass, the emphasis on balance rather than preconceived symmetry, and the expulsion of applied ornament.
Simplification, rejection of ornamentation, glass, steel and concrete as materials, transparency, construction, mass-production are major characteristic of International Style.

Bauhaus

Walter Gropius(German)

Walter Gropius had no degree in architecture. He established Bauhaus. He borrowed materials and methods of construction from technology. He preferred to use steel, glass, plywood, metal tubing, plastic laminate and concrete as materials, and designed smooth surfaces with primary colors.

Mies van der Rohe

Mies van der Rohe was a German-American architect. He valued the concepts of simplicity and clarity to appear frameless. He was a Director of the Bauhaus.
"Less is more" and "God is in the details"
Interiors were created using industrial steel and plate glass. He valued luxurious materials such as wood and marble. Chairs were created using tubular metal.
